Our Pastor

Bishop Dwayne C. Debnam serves as the Senior Pastor of the Morning Star Baptist Church in Catonsville, Maryland. He has served in this capacity since August of 1996. Before being called to the Morning Star Baptist Church (MSBC Ministries), he served for five years as the Assistant to the Pastor of the New Psalmist Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland under the mentorship of Dr. Walter Scott Thomas. It was at the New Psalmist Church where Dr. Debnam was licensed to preach in 1987 and ordained into the gospel ministry in 1991.

Bishop Debnam believes that the challenge that God set forth through his apostle Paul to “study to show thyself approved” is a standard that must be taken seriously. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the DeVry Institute of Technology, his Masters of Divinity Degree from Howard University, and he earned his Doctor of Ministry Degree from the Virginia Union School of Religion in June of 1999.

In 2002, Dr. Debnam was featured in “The African American Pulpit” as one of 20 Young African American Preachers to watch. On June 13, 2003, Dr. Debnam was installed as State Overseer for the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship of Maryland. He was consecrated Bishop in November 2004. He now serves as the Bishop of Social Actions for Full Gospel. Bishop Debnam also servers on the Board for the United Way Central Maryland.

Under the anointed leadership of Bishop Debnam, Morning Star is transforming the lives of men, women and children, locally and nationally. The congregation has grown from approximately 200 persons to over 3,000 members. The Church holds three Sunday worship services and two monthly communion worship services (mid-day and evening) on the first Wednesday of the month. In 2004, the Church also added a First Sunday youth worship service. Growing persons in the word of God is a ministry priority. Bible studies, discipleship classes and a comprehensive membership development program which includes Christian Foundation Classes and Spiritual Gifts Assessments are critical components within the ministry. In addition, the radio broadcast and the internet webcast of MSBC Ministries has reached and impacted persons throughout the world.

The ministry believes that we must minister to the total person, and that “The Time Is Now” for persons to walk in the destiny God has designed for them. To that end, MSBC openedThe Renaissance Christian Counseling Center in July 2001, offering professional, licensed counseling services in the areas of mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence, crisis intervention, and personal spiritual development; the MSBC Center for Excellence opened in July 2002 and offers GED preparation classes, computer classes, and an after school Enrichment Program for our youth; also in 2002, MSBC began operating The Next Level Limousine Service which provides quality service for all occasions. In 2004, the Ministry opened a Cultural Arts Center which offers training in music, dance and karate. In April 2005, the ministry opene a Men's Empowerment Center and its first Transitional Home was opened in 2006. Through these outreach ministries, and through teaching and preaching, Morning Star is equipping persons to embrace their tomorrow.

Pastor Debnam is a man of great integrity and character who truly has a heart for God’s people. Because of his obedience and faithfulness, God has shown favor upon Morning Star. Pastor Debnam believes that we must, “see what God sees, feel what God feels, and want what God wants. Only then can we effectively minister to His people.”

One of the most cherished blessings in Bishop Debnam’s life is his family. He realizes that to have a family that encourages him, supports him and participates in ministry is a gift that must not be taken for granted. His wife of 29 years, Carla, stands with him day after day to ensure that ministry is done in an excellent way. His three children, Corey, Jewell and Jared enable him and allow him to fulfill God’s will for his life. With his family by his side, Bishop Debnam willingly accepts the challenge of ministry in this new millennium.
